Hi there, we have a normal school here in Belgium too, sounds weird indeed.
I'm quite curious to know how hops are or were dried over there, oast houses do seem to be a fenomena in the UK but nowhere else. Will look into that photo essay, thanks for the tip!

My mother-in-law (long deceased) used to pick hops in the fall when she went to Teachers' College (called Normal School for some reason). I haven't seen anything similar to oust houses here, so I don't know how they dry them. I do know there was a tragic fatality some years back when a worker was in the bottom of a silo which was then filled with hops. There was a good photo essay of hop pickers recently in Spitalfieldslife.com
