If you’ve been reading, you will have noticed the recap of our autumn creative gathering last week. So as promised this week we can bring you the schedule! We will visit the local market and an artisanal butcher to buy produce, we will then cook with Giulia in her beautiful Tuscan home and studio. We’ll walk around San Gimignano by night and have dinner there, explore Sienna, visit a working farm, learn about sourdough baking, and table arrangements to go home as a perfect host. We will eat, drink and have fun, but we will also learn. There is an introduction to Lightroom if you are interested to participate, there is a talk on food writing, and Sarka, Giulia and I will talk you through how we photograph. We will also talk about how we got where we are today.

The event will be one day longer as our previous guests gave us the feedback they would have loved an extra day. This edition it is also a possibility to choose a single room, and there is an option to stay longer as on tuesday after the gathering there will be a big garden party in Giulia’s garden.

What is Three Acres Greative Gathering

For five years now we have been growing creatively together and while we struggled to find a work/life balance, especially in the process of writing books! We always managed to find new strength by arranging creative get togethers where we laugh, cook, eat, drink and most importantly learn from each other. We have now joined forces under ‘Three Acres’ to create this get together in beautiful places so you too can join in the conversation, the learning, the cooking and the eating. We will take photo’s though you don’t have to be a professional or even hobby photographer, just capture the moment with whatever camera you got. From a smart phone to a proper shooter, all is welcome.

New Dates april 20-23 2017

In october my friends Giulia and Sarka and I hosted our first Three Acres Creative Gathering. An event born out of our own habit of meeting up several times a year to cook, eat, drink together, laugh and inspire each other. We each live in different countries so gatherings are always planned ahead. This made us think…

On a crisp and unusually sunny first of januari Giulia and I sat by the fire in her Tuscan family home, sipping fennel tea and talking about creativity. We wondered if we could create an event to include others in our usually quite private meet-ups. And so on our next get-together – in London this time – Sarka and Giulia and I decided to make it happen. A creative gathering in the rolling Sienese countryside, catching the very end of summer as a preparation for the cold and dark months ahead.

Our guests came not only from Italy but also from The Netherlands, Ecuador and the USA. A diverse bunch of women, all creative and eager to spend a few days with other creative people. We visited an organic sheep cheese farm situated in a rough rural landscape with the most exquisite view. We tasted the different cheeses with the farms thick fig compote made from their own precious few figs and slices of new season pears in an unusually warm autumn sun outside. The red wine served from a large glass carafe into lemonade glasses tasted like a rich grape juice, we all knew that back home it was already winter and savoured every moment.

We talked about our photography, our journey, our experience and our plans. We learned how to handle sourdough and take care of a starter culture from Manuela. We made all natural body products with Claudia, the products so pure you can eat them if you wanted to. Irene from Val Di rose showed us some secrets in flower arranging and table settings so we could go home to be perfect dinner party hosts. Giulia taught us Tuscan cooking in her beautiful new country kitchen and studio which she built in her family home. There were sourdough pizza’s baked in Giulia’s family wood fired oven in the garden, so were the beans, cooked overnight with olive oil and herbs for lunch the day after. Buttery beans which were then scooped onto toasted sourdough bread, first rubbed with fresh garlic. I could just feast on this every day, good bread, good olive oil and good beans plus garlic, what is not to adore. We visited the town of Siena at sunset and had more food therapy at a rustic ristorante in one of the narrow medieval streets. We always wondered if we could eat more that day and then the next feast came and we tucked in with greed and happiness, the sun on our faces.

And after this first chapter there will be a next… and so we are happy to announce the final dates for our spring creative gathering in April from the 20th late afternoon until the 23rd in the evening. Our location will be the the beautiful surroundings of Siena where you will stay in a working farm, but don’t worry, you won’t need to help with the farming!

Registration opens in a week but places are limited so if you want to be sure of your spot you can email me to reserve until the booking page goes live.

Why not read Simone, Manuela and Irene‘s blog posts about our lovely weekend together!

I’m excited to finally announce what my dear friend Giulia and Sarka and I have been working on for the past few months!

Join us for a creative gathering which will celebrate the seasonal food and the pleasure of getting together in a quiet location in the Tuscan countryside.

Three Acres – Creative Gathering

Strands of mist entangled around the branches of the trees on the hilltop. The smell of a fireplace at dusk. A whiff of roast chestnuts around every corner, a chestnut cake with rosemary, pine nuts, raisins and olive oil. Mushrooms and squash. A glug of nocino – a traditional walnut liqueur by the fire. Toasted bread with a drizzle of new olive oil and creamy beans spooned on top.
You can not find a better moment to visit the Tuscan countryside.

What we will be up to*

You will stay at a lovely agriturismo in the Sienese countryside on the outskirts of a tiny village with only a few houses. We will pick you up every day and when we are at Jul’s Kitchen we will walk there and enjoy the fresh air. Juls’ Kitchen is situated in that tiny village and is the cookery studio of Giulia Scarpaleggia who has been teaching Tuscan cookery courses and food expeditions there for over five years. The studio is cosy and features a large open plan kitchen where will will cook and eat and drink copious amounts of tea. We have a lovely big garden there with wonderful countryside views, olive trees and the company of a Maremma Sheep dog and a black cat.

We will light up the wood burning oven to make pizza, focaccia and bread, we will enjoy a spread of local vegetables and charcuterie to taste the real flavour of the countryside, we will walk under century old oaks to channel nature’s force and inspiration.

Inspired by the ‘Three Acres and a Cow’ philosophy we will visit a local organic family run cheese farm where they make a raw milk pecorino, the typical sheep milk cheese of Tuscany. After the farm we will head to Siena for a walk and dinner in one of the most well preserved medieval towns of Tuscany. There will be plenty opportunities for each student to practice the techniques learned during the weekend.
Giulia, Regula and Sarka will discuss their philosophy on styling and shooting and we will show you how to style and photograph one subject in three different styles.

(You will receive more information in an email)

Why this price?

We have done everything to keep the price as low as possible but as we pay each producer or business and work with beautiful local produce, the price reflects that. We want the small businesses we work with to benefit from this, not be left out of pocket because we are after a freebie. Everyone deserves to get the price they or their product is worth.

Three Acres And A Cow
Three acres – or in full: ‘Three Acres and a Cow’ is a phrase used by British land reform campaigners in the 19th century to highlight rural poverty. Every man would need three acres and a cow to look after his family for a year. Today we have moved so far from this situation that most of us don’t even have a garden to grow some vegetables or rear a couple of chickens. We don’t even know what vegetables, fish or meat are in season. With our Creative Gatherings we want to unplug a little from modern day and age. We will visit an artisan producer in the most beautiful countryside and we will start a fire in a brick wood fired oven to prepare our meal to celebrate the end of summer and the coming of winter. We will reconnect with nature and the wheel of life through what we see and do.
